Love the concept of mental maps. I think that's how our dogs think all the time.
I agree with the dumb bird thing, although I am generally thinking how the hell a person so dumb can be so smart, in my daily interactions. I guess being smart is relative. I don't mean to sound cruel, but you are a much more tolerant person than I.
I love you, and really enjoyed reading your thoughts this week. I have been wondering what it's like to be on a turkey hunt. Seems like they show up frequently whenever I am in the woods (infrequently), but obviously not the time or place to actually "get" one.
Enjoyed this, Lou. I’m a novice turkey hunter and like hearing your perspective. I didn’t start hunting turkey for a while because I refused to sit “another” season (in addition to deer archery). My friend showed me another method; listening, then getting above, and calling them in. Some of the most liberating, exciting, and bizarre times I’ve had! Of course it requires a good chunk of land to roam (and turkeys). 🦃
That recipe looks delicious but more importantly, I want Unicorn Waffles. Because, why not.
You have hit on the truth in observations and I appreciate how you liked it to what you enjoy best (ie turkey v deer hunting).
I think there is a why in the mental maps we individually cultivate. Yes, it includes those things that matter to us,but also what grounds us into moments or spaces.
And then there is the flip side, which is often more true—how the hell a person so smart can sometimes be so dumb? Life is full of surprises!

Smart is as smart does… love you!
“only found success at a location after I’ve put in the time to learn the property”
Expand those words beyond hunting to … everything!
Money, time, energy and attention … our most vital finite assets. Invest wisely, as you are doing Lou! 🖖
Ah, so true! Thanks, Baird!

Love that strategy — just wish I could do it more often!
Good one.
Thanks, Josh!

Yes, totally!
