Loved this Lou! It is still fairly new information to me about how trees communicate through fungal networks and all. But once I grasped the concept it was like “duh! Of course they do! We are all interconnected!” I suspect that one day we will be able to prove that even rocks have spirit and energy. That must be why I carry them in my pockets!

My kids are on to that about rocks, too!

The predator was not hungry, and both were thirsty, and they live in a "one-saloon" town.

Yes— I do not think the rabbit ever considers the horned owl its friend.

That would be absurdity to me.

Maybe you can have respect for an enemy, but friendship?

On a happy note— I want a big hockey puck burger.

I love you.

I wondered often while we were in Africa, predator and prey sharing the same watering hole — unconcerned and a cool truce — how to describe that dynamic?

And fortunately, the burgers are easy to accommodate soon!

I think Abbey's imagining of the rabbit's mental state as it is ripped apart is largely romanticized anthropomorphism. Just sayin'.

Happy 35 Lou! You can do great things with the next 10 years (and beyond)!

You're probably right. But I had a mentor once tell me that "it's all in our imagination until it isn't." And I can tell you, having recently been in situations rolling jiu jitsu where I'm being choked or arm-barred or just generally smothered -- there is a sweet, perverse sense of relief (and maybe even gratitude) when you finally stop resisting and accept the submission. So, just sayin'.

;)

Thanks, Baird!

“We’re all connected through our roots” is a more than adequate answer; it’s simple, clear, and true. Thanks. And best wishes for another year of living and writing.

I've pondered the concept Abbey wrote about in your quote a great deal. There is something to that mutual relation and I plan to write about it at some point.

Burgers look epic. I have not tried the egg yolk thing. I have some whitetail burger that will get that treatment next week, thanks for the tip.

Bun recipe is here https://gonterian.substack.com/p/the-lobster-roll-on-a-brioche-bun

I wasn't kidding when I said it stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't finish the rest of the essay that night. Look forward to seeing what you come up with (and I think you hinted at it the other day).

I have serious aspirations of making those lobster rolls and buns with my first free-dive lobster of the season... just need to get in the water!
