Happy Friday folks. We’re hitting the tail end of the summer, and I for one, got a little sad to realize that the sun will no longer be in the sky past 7:30pm here in New England. As best said by the Stark family: Winter is Coming.
But, not yet. We’ve still got a a couple months of great weather — the tail end of summer and then the onset of fall. Not feeling like it today, of course, with temps nearing 90, but you get the picture. Plenty of time left to be outside before you need a few extra layers. Enjoy it.
Today, let’s talk about smoothies. Mrs. CWD slurps one down almost every morning for breakfast and we go on green smoothie kicks for months on end. Not eating breakfast, I instead have mine around lunchtime — but whenever you choose to drink one, they’re easy and a great way to pack in loads of nutrients in a convenient package. Let’s take a look a few options that get consumed in our household.
Before we start, I’d say that a Vitamix is a huge boon in crafting these, as the consistency is unbeatable. But, you certainly can make these work with any blender, you just might find it a bit more gritty.
The Classic: Toss a boat load of baby spinach or kale in your blender. Add fruit as you see fit (strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and mango all work well). Fill up about 2/3rds of the way with water (or even a little orange juice) and blend.
The Salad: Use any veggies you have on hand, with a base of greens. I’ll often throw in cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, or even cabbage. Avocado adds a nice texture. Whatever it takes to clear the fridge. Add some apple cider vinegar, turmeric, maybe a squeeze of lemon. Add a couple berries for sweetness, fill 2/3rds with water or coconut water, and blend.
The Christine: Add a few scoops of rolled oats to the blender and let it run a few minutes so the oats turn to dust. Add milk, peanut butter, maybe some unflavored protein powder, and frozen (or fresh) bananas. You could also do blueberries or strawberries. Blend. This gets thicker the longer it sits, so keep that in mind.
The V10: Use greens, tomatoes, celery, beets, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, ginger, lemon, a dash of sea salt, and a splash of fruit juice. Fill with water and blend.
There are a few options for you, but feel free to get creative. I like more of a savory smoothie, but if you prefer sweet, use more fruit or even some honey. You can add protein powder, creatine, or one of those supergreen powders as desired. It’s all gravy.
Enjoy the weekend, and feel free to share what you’re blending. I’d also ask, if you know anyone who might be interested in reading what I eat, to feel free to share this newsletter.
